If you suffer from migraines, you may know that you cannot get relief from common pain medications. But you may not know that you can use a bamboo pillow for migraine relief.

What are Migraines?

Migraine Trust, a research-driven charity that supports and campaigns for migraine sufferers in the UK, defines migraines as a complicated neurological debilitating disorder that affects both the young and old, male and female.

Migraines affect 1 in 7 people at some point in their lives. Children, adolescents and young adults can already experience migraine attacks. However, adults aged 35 to 45 are greatly affected, with women experiencing them more than men.

In women, the prevalence and level of pain in migraines is brought about by changes in the hormones during monthly periods, pregnancy, and menopause. Women sufferers experience more painful and more frequent migraine attacks.

What are the Symptoms of a Migraine?

Do you experience pulsating aches on only one side of your head? Do they sometimes make you feel nauseous? Does vomiting and unusual weakness or tiredness sometimes accompany these attacks? Are you sometimes confined to your bed with the curtains drawn and a “don’t disturb” sign boldly displayed on your door? If you say “yes” to one or all of these most common symptoms, then you are possibly suffering from migraines.

In order to determine whether you have migraines or just typical headaches, there are ways to distinguish one from the other.

A migraine has four to five phases that each lead to the next:

  1. Premonitory or Warning Phase –occurs when certain physical or mental changes happen like a sudden craving for sweet food to mood changes or physical tiredness.
  2. Aura Phase – may or may not happen, characterised by neurological symptoms such as:
  • seeing dark, coloured or sparkly spots;
  • a feeling of numbness, tingling, weakness, or vertigo; and,
  • partial paralysis or fainting, in rare cases.
  1. Main Attack Phase – the sufferer may experience a throbbing pain on one side or both sides of the head that may be so severe as to be unbearable, often made worse by physical movement.
  2. Resolution Phase – may include the fading away or sudden relief of the pain after vomiting or crying a lot. Sleeping is often the most helpful remedy.
  3. Recovery Phase – characterised by a feeling similar to experiencing a hangover, often lasting for hours and occasionally for days after the migraine attack.

This is why Migraine Trust holds Migraine Awareness Week which falls on the first week of September.

The main mission of the said charity is mainly to promote awareness of the condition, promote research that can ease the suffering of those who experience migraines, and eventually find a cure for it.

Some activities have already been scheduled, such as the Thames Path Challenge on the 7th. Participants can take on the challenge by walking, jogging, or running the path along this famous English river. Another activity on the same date is the Thames Bridges Trek, a 25km walk with an estimated 2000 trekkers.

The details of other events have not yet been released.
